What's up at Fotocodex

We are always working on something new such as: products, enhancements to our collaborative web based digital photo book publishing system, enhancements to our back end production system, enhancements to our marketing engines or ...

We've been working on producing a high quality printed cover for a bit now. Most of the effort has been in finding the right material to use, running tests, reviewing, sending out samples, collecting feedback and repeating the whole thing over and over until we are sure we can provide a high quality item for a reasonable price. As always we want to provide something distinct instead of just jumping into the fray and playing copycat because there's no fun in that!

So here it is. Sneak peek!

Fotocodex Printed Cover!

We're working out the options for this to make the design of the covers easy. In this example the cover is white with the title printed using black text. The photo bleeds off one end of the book, almost leading you into it while the rest is surrounded by an elegant white margin.

The material we are printing on has a linen like textured feel. It has been designed for covering books so it is super resistant to handling which is fantastic. We want them to be passed around, leafed through and oooh'd and ahhh'd over for many many years!

We print using a state of the art high resolution flatbed printer. We've pulled out all the stops and yet and yet this will be an affordable option!

Immortalise your life through a digital photo book

The story of your life can come alive with the pictures you have taken throughout the years. When you sit looking at a batch of old photos, you cherish every moment as you reminisce of the good times and the sad times; looking into the eyes of family and friends who warmed your heart and have been with you through every experience. For the few that are dedicated, these pictures will make their way into a photo album to provide a chronological timeframe. But for most, this is a laborious process.

Today, digital cameras make it so easy and affordable to take thousands of pictures, now that the cost of development is eliminated. Computer hard drives are filled with folders containing these life events, including those 50th, 75th, and 90th birthday milestones. With very little effort, you could create a digital photo album to allow the photographs to be viewed by anyone, anywhere. Better still; the album is not limited to only your photos. Not all digital photo books are created equal

Not all digital photo books are created equal!

First some terminology. Digital photo book, digital photobook, digital album, digital printed album, photobook, fotobook these are all the same terms for a product which consists of printing your photos and text on high quality digital presses and then binding those pages into a book. It is the modern day digital equivalent of the photo album. It is a physical product which you can hold in your hands, place on your coffee table, browse with your family and friends.

We started Fotocodex because we wanted to provide you with artisan quality digital photo books. We sought an option that was not mass produced and that stood out amongst all the others on the market.

Just how are we different?

There are two main factors which determine your photo book's quality: print quality and the binding quality.

Photographic Print Quality
(Not all digital presses are created equal)

Most photo book providers are using one of three types of digital presses: HP Indigo, Xerox iGen, or the Kodak Nexpress. All are capable of delivering good photographic prints but at Fotocodex we believe that the HP Indigo 5000/5500 consistently delivers excellent quality. We further enhance your photos' quality by printing them on a carefully chosen high quality matte finish paper.

The quality coming off the Indigo digital press is excellent as is. We don't have to run your pages through a varnishing process with non environment friendly chemicals nor do we have to laminate your pages with a micro-thin plastic coating (more non environment friendly stuff).

We do not run nor do we believe in using automated photo enhancing software. Personally we find that their results are hit and miss. The programmed enhancements are subject to personal tastes. They are a one size fits all solution. Some photos perhaps look better some suffer.

At Fotocodex we just focus on ensuring that our Indigo digital press delivers the highest quality output it possibly can w/o relying on these automatic software photo enhancers.

Creating the hard back
(not all bindings are created equal)

Casing your book's pages into a hard bound book is perhaps where Fotocodex distinguishes itself from everyone else. Every one of our books is built by hand and is built to last. We rely on the techniques of old world craftsmanship to make you the best possible digital photo book for your money.

Our hard backs are offered in cloth or suedette. They can be plain covers or can have a personalized title stamped on to them.

We have two new offerings which are being trialed to a selected group of professional clients: natural leather hard backs and printed cover hard backs.

The leather is soft and supple. Available in red, midnight blue, dark green or brown. You can have your title stamped as well.

Printed covers are our newest item. We use a textured material resembling art canvas which has been specially designed for covering books. We print your design onto this material using a high resolution flatbed printer. The quality is truly stunning!

So not all photo books are created equal. Fotocodex focuses on delivering you artisan quality heirloom photo books.

Our New Photobook Products

Fotocodex has introduced to a limited list of professional clients the following new photobook products:

• leather bound photobooks (midnight blue, dark green, dark brown, red)
  
• printed cover photobooks where you design the front/back covers!
  
• extra large photobook with pages measuring 16.5" x 11.0" (419 mm x 281 mm)

These products will make their way shortly into our standard offering once we have proofed out our production and quality control lines for them.

Professional Photobooks with Fotocodex

Fotocodex offers a distinct workflow for professionals who wish to use their own album design software such as: Indesign CS, QuarkExpress, Album DS, DG Foto Art, Apple's Aperture and others.

The process is simple. Setup your page dimensions according to the type of photo book you'd like to create. Design your pages and then export them either as a single PDF file or individual JPG files. Upload the file(s) and place your order.
